Billiton buys Canadian zinc mining company Billiton has formed an alliance with Eagle Plains Resources of Canada. Billiton has purchased 1.125m Eagle shares at C$0.4 each. In exchange Billiton will get the right to an option on two zinc-bearing ore properties and rights of first refusal over future financing by Eagle.

Billiton's 5th bid for Venezuelan aluminium plant Billiton is about to launch its 5th attempt to acquire a stake in Corporacion Venezolana de Guyana, Venezuela's parastatal aluminium producer which produces around 4% of world output. The gem in the company is the 430ktpa Venalum smelter. Last year, the base price for a 70% stake was $1.55bn, but talks are not that far advanced yet. Electricity in Venezuela is very cheap and that means that production at the smelter can be done at one of the lowest costs in the world. A caveat is that the company is very overstaffed, and strong unions will make it difficult and expensive to retrench workers. Aluminium currently contributes around 40% of Billiton's profit.
