BHPBill quarterly exploration and development
Five projects have been commissioned since the September 2004 quarter. Of the remaining ten projects that were under construction during the quarter, all are tracking on or ahead of schedule and eight are within original board approved expenditure limits. The exceptions are Atlantis and Dendrobium. During the quarter, BHP Billiton spent USD36 million on minerals exploration, of which USD35 million was expensed, and USD76 million on petroleum exploration, of which USD25 million was expensed.

BHPBill quarterly production information
BHPBill released its production report for the quarter ended 31 December 2004 on Thursday, 27 January 05. BHPBill reported record quarterly iron ore, metallurgical coal and manganese alloy production underpinned by continuing strong customer demand. It further recorded quarterly natural gas production of 87.4 billion cubic feet following the commissioning of North West Shelf (Australia) fourth train in September 2004. Record quarterly silver production of 12.4 million ounces reflecting the benefits of a continuing debottlenecking program at Cannington (Australia) was also reported. The first oil production from the newly commissioned ROD (Algeria) field also took place during the period.

BHPBill board appointment
BHP Billiton Chairman Don Argus today announced the appointment of Carlos Cordeiro to the BHP Billiton board, effective 3 February 2005. Mr Cordeiro is a former Partner and Managing Director of The Goldman Sachs Group, Inc. Since his retirement he has continued as an Advisory Director of the firm and as Vice Chairman of Goldman Sachs (Asia).

BHPBill Aluminium Southern Africa COO
BHP Billiton today announced the appointment of Dr Xolani Mkhwanazi as COO, Aluminium southern Africa, to be based in Johannesburg, with effect from 1 February 2005. Dr Mkhwanazi will be responsible for BHPBill`s southern African aluminium smelters, Hillside, Bayside and Mozal.

BHPBill planning USD600m gas terminal
BHPBill is planning a new gas terminal off the coast of Los Angeles. The project is said to cost approximately USD600m and is to be completed by 2009.
