Shareholders are advised that as at 23 Dec 02, Barclays PLC, had a noticeable interest in 74, 377,139 ordinary USD0.50 shares representing 3.01% of the issued share capital.

BHP to sell stake in Cvrd
Sweet River Investments Ltd (Sweet River), in which BHP Billiton holds a 66.97% interest, announced its intention to sell its 11.56% interest in Valepar SA to Companhia Siderurgica Nacional (CSN). Valepar is a major (approx. 27%) shareholder in Brazil`s Companhia Vale do Rio Doce (CVRD), the largest iron ore producer in the world. BHP Billiton`s interest in Sweet River corresponds to approximately 2.1% of CVRD`s total capital. The sale by Sweet River is being made via the exercise of a 'put' option on its Valepar shares to CSN that is exercisable up until May 2004. BHP Billiton`s share of the consideration is approximately US$343m. .

BHP names Computershare as global service provider
BHP has appointed Computershare as the global share registry service provider with effect from the 3 Feb 03. The contract will be based from a single point of contact in Melbourne and new contact details will be released in due course.

BHP plans to reduce copper production
BHP Billiton reduced its production of copper by about 24% because of weak demand for the metal. Copper prices in New York jumped after the announcement. The cutbacks will reduce overall copper production by 390 000 tons at an annualised rate. Copper cutbacks are expected from Escondida in Chile, Tintaya in Peru and Pinto Valley and Robinson mines in the US. Management of BHP has said that they will continue with their production to demand program.

BHP announces natural gas discovery
BHP has announced that a hydrocarbon natural gas find was discovered at the exploratory well on the Vortex prospect in the Gulf of Mexico. The Vortex prospect is operated by BHP although they only have a one third interest in the prospect with two other partners.

BHP to extend copper cutbacks
BHP has announced that it will continue the demand based production of copper that was announced in Nov 01. The annual targeted production rate for the Escondida mine will be 1.05m tonnes with a further 34 000 tonnes of cathode coming from the Tintaya mine. Both the Pinto Valley and Robinson mines are to remain on standby. BHP will continue on this basis until demand for copper increases, the production targets will be reassessed in June 03.

Billiton bid for Fording
Market rumours are that Billiton might bid for coal exporter Fording, rivalling a R9.29b offer by Sherritt International and Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan. Steel producers might lobby regulators to block any takeover of Fording by Billiton. Both companies declined to comment on this possibility.
