    Sasol subsidiary invests R1.2bn in Malaysia
    Sasol subsidiary Polifin has invested R1.2bn in Malaysia through the acquisition of 12% of Optimal Olefins, a joint venture between Petronas and Union Carbide. This almost doubles Polifin's investment in Malaysia after its R1bn investment in a 40% stake in a low density polyethylene plant in Kertih. Optimal is constructing an ethylene cracker at the Kertih petrochemical centre. The Optimal plant will supply feedstock for various downstream plants in addition to the adjacent polyethylene joint venture and will have a capacity of 255 000 tons per annum.

    Analysts speculate over Sasol's earnings
    Analysts are predicting a 60% increase in headline earnings for Sasol for the financial year ending 30 Jun 00. The consensus forecast is set at 633c per share compared to actual eps of 420c for 1999. The increase is based on the increased oil price, the depreciation of the rand and diversification into high margin chemical operations.

    Sasol subsidiary to supply Engen with gas
    In a deal worth R450m over 5 years, Sasol subsidiary The SA Gas Distribution Corporation is to supply Engen's Durban refinery with methane-rich gas. Engen has moved from fuel oil fired refining to gas fired refining after residents in the area objected to the high levels of sulphur dioxide emissions. The virtually sulphur free gas comes from the group's Secunda plant and will be delivered through an 1.5km extension to the existing pipeline supplying Mondi.
