BHP focuses attention on alumina
BHP Billiton's aluminium customer sector group is turning its focus on expanding its alumina output rather than aluminium smelter capacity, Mike Salamon, executive director, told an international investor presentation yesterday (18 Nov 03). The change in the company's growth focus is in response to strong demand for alumina and aluminium from China, which is growing its GDP at 8% a year.

BHP puts hopes in China
BHP said yesterday (13 Nov 03), that booming demand from China would help offset challenging conditions elsewhere. BHP was also forced to defend its indutrial relations record after unions claimed it was violating a UN agreement it has signed, guaranteeing workers' rights. Don Argus, chairman, told the BHP AGM, that the company expected strong demand from China to continue and to broaden beyond iron ore and alumina.

BHP announces oil find
Billiton today (12 Nov 03) announced the results of its first appraisal well on the Shenzi field, discovered last year in the deepwater Gulf of Mexico. Shenzi-2 began drilling on 22 Sep 03, on Green Canyon Block 653 with the BHP Billiton operated drillship CR Luigs.

BHP: Coal mine nearing completion
BHP has said that its USD170m Dendrobium coal mine in Austalia is about 45% complete, with full-scale mining expected to start ahead of schedule in the first quarter of next year. Dendrobium opened yesterday (4 Nov 03), and will be the first new mine investment in the state's southern coalfields for 20 years.
