Workers go on strike at Billiton's Mozal smelter Workers at Billiton's Mozal aluminium smelter have started on an open ended strike to press pay claims in defiance of a threat of dismissal. Local workers are demanding that they be paid in line with their expatriate colleagues (mostly from Australia and SA). The company has stated that the strike is illegal and that if workers did not return to work soon they will be given a suspension note which could lead to dismissal. The dispute involves about 600 Mozambican workers.

Billiton ESOP Trustees Ltd sells shares Billiton ESOP Trustees Ltd, as trustee of the Billiton Employee Share Ownership Trust, has sold 47 402 Billiton ords at GBP3.02ps on 12 Feb 01 in connection with the Company's restricted share scheme, on behalf of three non-relevant persons. Furthermore, Billiton ESOP Trustees Ltd has transferred 30 865 Billiton ords to a non-relevant participant of the Company's restricted share scheme.
