    BHP Billiton update on BHP Steel listing
    BHP Billiton Chief Development Officer Chip Goodyear provided an update on the proposed de-merger and public listing of BHP Steel including a brief overview of principles related to transaction terms.     BHP Billiton -- significant oil discovery
    BHP Billiton announced a significant oil discovery offshore Trinidad -- the group's fourth commercial hydrocarbon discovery in the shallow waters off the east coast of Trinidad. Early stages of the appraisal of the reserves indicate that this is likely to be a multi-hundred million barrel discovery. BHP Billiton holds a 45% interest in Block 2(c) and is the designated operator. Other partners include TotalFinaElf and Talisman Energy. BHP Billiton is also involved in the negotiation of a Production Sharing Contract for exploration Block 3(a) which is adjacent to the group's discoveries in Block 2 (c).

    BHP Billiton to construct new coal mine
    BHP Billiton announced approval for the construction of the Dendrobium metallurgical coal mine in the Illawarra region of New South Wales. The mine will have the capacity to produce 5.2 million tonnes of raw coal per annum with capital expenditure estimated at US$126m. Dendrobium will be wholly owned and operated by BHP Billiton and be a valuable source of high quality metallurgical coal. Development will commence during Nov 01 with the first longwall production expected by early 2005. The mine will employ 170 workers and generate an additional 1 000 direct and indirect jobs. The mine has the potential to inject more than A$400m into the regional economy.
