    Billiton's Mozal smelter starts production
    Billiton's Mozal smelter in Mozambique poured its first aluminium on 18 Jun 00. This was achieved 25 months after the start of the project and 6 months ahead of schedule. Production is expected to reach full capacity of 250 000 tonnes per annum in the first quarter of 2001 after continued trials and testing. The project cost should be below the budgeted $1.3bn.

    Billiton's Samancor in chrome joint venture
    Samancor Chrome, which is jointly held by Billiton (60%) and Anglo (40%), has signed a joint venture agreement with Xstrata AG to form a production joint venture at Xstrata's Wonderkop Ferrochrome facility in the North West Province. The joint venture will be 50% held by Samancor and 50% by Xstrata and will exploit the benefits of Samancor Chrome's high quality chrome reserves and Xstrata's cost efficient ferrochrome production operation. The venture will comprise 2 new 45MVA submerged arc furnaces, an agglomeration plant and a recovery plant with a total production capacity of 180 000 metric tons per annum. Total capital expenditure is estimated at $40m and production is expected to commence in the first half of 2001.

    Billiton in joint venture in China
    Billiton subsidiary Billiton China BV has formed a joint venture with Lanping Nonferrous Metals Company to develop the Lanping zinc deposit in Western Yunnan, China. Billiton will ultimately hold 65% of the joint venture after injecting funds. Lanping has the potential to become one of the largest and most efficient zinc operations in the world. Production is estimated at 250 000 tonnes of zinc per annum and a full feasibility study should be completed by the end of 2001.
