Task team says Sasol should keep huge benefits
According to Business Report, a task team, which investigated a proposed windfall tax on synthetic fuel producers, was quoted as saying that Sasol should not be punished or be forced to wipe the slate clean for receiving billions of rands in soft loans, tariff protection and other measures during and after the firm's privatisation. Instead the task team recommended a forward-looking tax on the volumes of synthetic fuel produced, using a progressive sliding rate of tax that varied with the price of crude oil. The proposal of this type of tax could alarm Sasol's shareholders, more than a third of whom are foreign.
